The exhibition Recognition 4 was opened at the Art Gallery in Kruševac, in Serbia, on November 9, 2018. It is part of a long-term curatorial project, aiming at showing the development of contemporary art in the region, including several towns from the Balkans. The project was created by some of the most prominent art critics from Serbia and Montenegro, like Biljana Grkovic from Kruševac (coordinator), Milica Todorovic from Niš, Julka  Marinkovic from Čačak, Ljubisha Simovic from Kraljevo and Liljana Karadzhic from Podgorica, Montenegro.

The project, launched in 2004, has had three editions. The first one was held in Kruševac, Čačak, Kraljevo, Niš (Serbia), and Podgorica (Montenegro) in the period 2005-2007.  Recognition 2 was held in Podgorica, Čačak, Niš, Kruševac, Kraljevo, Kumanovo (Macedonia) and Sofia (Bulgaria - with the participation of Rosen Toshev, Venelin Shurelov, Georgi Yankov), from 2009 to 2012. The exhibition was also shown at the Academy gallery, in Sofia, in 2013, something that in a way was contradictory to the ideology of the project, whose goal is to activate art scenes outside capitals.

In  the fourth edition take part the artists Elena Rubil from Kruševac, Ivana Stankovic from Niš, Nina Galic from Kraljevo, Vesna Ilic Darievic from Čačak, Jovana Vujanovic from Podgorica and Bogdan Aleksandrov from Vidin. After the gallery in Kruševac, in 2019 the exhibition Recognition 4 will be shown in other towns as well, which are the usual partners of the project – the Gallery for Contemporary Art in Niš, the Nadezhda Petrovic Art Gallery, in Čačak, the National Museum, in Kraljevo, the National Museum of Montenegro, in Cetinje and the Nikola Petrov gallery, in Vidin.

The project is significant as it demonstrates how important it is to be informed about what is going on in the neighboring countries. The “recognition” is obviously important because in our region we seem to have grown invisible to one another. Our gaze is directed towards the big centers of contemporary art and we fail to see what is happening here, in South-Eastern Europe. Every next exhibition is a step towards better communication, making contacts and realization of future events.

The exhibition in Kruševac will last until December 9, 2018.
